Lagniappe
[Pronounced LAWN-yap. Or, LANNY-yap] An unexpected gift. Or, an extra, additional benefit received after making a purchase.
What I Thought It Meant:
The practice of taking a nap on a lawn after eating a large amount of lasagna. Whatever. But I hope your Christmas has been filled with joy and happiness, and a largesse of lagniappes.

Thanks. Same to you. Mark Twain helped make the word famous. It was fashionable to use, about a hundred or so years ago.

My cousin Sarah likes to use that word. Sarah N. Dipity is her full name.

I have a cousin named Sarah, also, and she thinks that word is funny. So funny it kills. Her name is Sarah N. Gass.

She could hang out with my cousin and her sister Kay. I’m sure Kay, Sarah, Sarah and the rest of the gang will be fine.

I haven’t seen Kay in a long time. But if you see Kay, tell her I said hi.

Well, I got a long nap. That’s as good as any gift.

Looking at the spelling versus pronunciation, I was picturing a sunbathing Frenchman… kinda’ hard to un-see now.

Imagine him sunbathing for longer than advisable. Then you can picture a French fry.

Yep… That’s the image. A lawn nap by a French fry in a Speedo. Guess that brain-worm is my X-mas lagniappe. 😛

What a terrific word, and very fitting for the season! Years ago, before it closed, our local bakery would often give you a cookie when you purchased your bread 🤤 I thought they were lovely, now I know what to call it!

That was very nice of the baker. Sounds like you’ve been lagniapped.

Pffft! I took it to my bank and handed it to the teller, with a note that said, “Give me all your $20 bills, up to this amount.” Would you believe she called the cops on me?

So you used it to pay bail?

No. When I saw the cops, I ran. Fortunately, I was wearing a Covid mask, so nobody can identify me.

I was thinking ‘log nap,’ myself.

Would that be the kind of nap where you sleep like a log, or the kind where you snore so loudly you’re sawing logs?

I may have pictured sleeping after getting hit by a log

😄 Well, that would make you sleep like a log.
