      • Oh… the big city. 🙂 I know where to get a decent pizza in SC, but that’s about it. And I don’t recommend surfing at the beaches around Lighthouse Field… just, don’t.

Get tired of the college crowd, the Boardwalk and the scary surf, you can do the E. Cliff Drive thing down to Capitola (you’ll be going the right way in the one-way section). The Capitola Beach/ Esplanade Park area still has a kind of a quaint little beach and touristy shopping district. Good beginner surfing spot, too. I spent the latter 70’s a few blocks from the beach; but we moved across the highway into Soquel in the 80’s.

          • Yeah, the surf’s lousy in Monterey. Still, I used to hang out around the area as a teen… especially in the “artsy” back alleys of Carmel-By-The Sea.

If the Mission wasn’t enough, head about another hour down the coast, you can have a religious experience at Esalen Institute. Also a good place for a massage and a soak in the cliff-side hot springs… if you don’t mind running around in the buff. 😉
