Stolen Quote: Religion

Every religion is true one way or another. It is true when understood metaphorically. But when it gets stuck in its own metaphors, interpreting them as facts, then you are in trouble. ~ Joseph Campbell, American author

Now if only the religious would just metaphorically try to convert me, I wouldn’t mind their religions.

  1. Thank you for the quote and your take on it. Now when they come knocking on my door to try to enlighten me I have something to say to them. I wonder what they might think of my new friend, JC (Joseph Campbell).

  2. That’s why we like to keep metaphors and reality separate, just like church and state. The state is largely metaphorical now, too, but it’s nothing but trouble when you mix your metaphors so keep those separate, too. I don’t usually mix my metaphors, but when I do, it’s in service of a funny t-shirt, like “What Would Jesus Do For a Klondike Bar?” Two great phrases that taste great together. ๐Ÿ™‚
